The Evolving Role of Islam in Pakistan’s Political Landscape: A Comparative Analysis of Civilian and Military Regimes
Thus, this study explores the role of Islam in politics in Pakistan from a multidimensional perspective by looking at the evolution of Islam in shaping the political agenda under civilian and military regimes. Over the years, some politicians and leaders have found Islam as a useful political tool to legitimize their military rule. The research showed the changing way of implementation of Islamic principles from General Ayub Khan's Islamic socialism to General Ziaul Haq's Islamization and the return to pragmatism of Pervez Musharraf through a historical and thematic analysis. The findings show that Islamic movements such as Jamaat-e-Islami and JUI-F manipulated the political processes, and their effects have created political polarization and also produced instability. The findings highlight the role of Islam in Pakistan's governance and national identity as a force that informs both secular as well as religious policy.
